It feels like I’ve been waiting for a Glossier makeup release for ages, AGES I tell you. After a couple weeks of teasing, the brand finally launched Ultralip, which has the hydrating effects of a balm, the sheen of a gloss, and buildable color of a lipstick. Many of you visit my blog for Glossier product reviews and rankings so today is no different. I’m so excited to be sharing my Glossier Ultralip review, plus swatches and looks of the shades I purchased.
For reference, I have a fair complexion with a neutral (leaning cool) undertone. I honestly had a hard time figuring out what shades would look best on me based solely on the model photos on the product page so I went with my best guess:
Villa – a dusty rose
Portrait – a cherry blossom pink
Fête – a watermelon red
Other shades in the collection:
Lucite – a soft peony pink (the lightest shade of the bunch)
Cachet – a walnut brown
Coupe – a blood orange
Trench – a toffee brown
Vesper – a rich fuchsia
Ember – a deep mauve
The Formula
Ultralip is cruelty-free and formulated without fragrance. It’s a vegan formula made with a blend of Meadowfoam, Jojoba, and Watermelon—all of which will help lock in moisture and make lips feel soft and comfortable. It also has Hyaluronic Acid to help keep lips from drying out. Basically, it’s the complete opposite of Gen G and I am here for it!
I chose the shade Villa because it looked like a nice, subtle everyday neutral that learned more pink than nude. Portrait seemed like a good, medium pink and Fete looked like the perfect bright lip for summertime. In terms of opacity, they are all sheer but definitely buildable in color. It’s easy to apply straight from the tube.
The Packaging
I was excited to learn that the lipstick packaging is made with up to 50% postconsumer recycled plastic. The packaging looks identical to Generation G except the exterior is a cute millennial pink tube as opposed to bright white.
Glossier Ultralip Review
In comparison to the other lip products Glossier sells, Ultralip is a dream for anyone with dry lips. As someone who is incredibly lazy when it comes to applying lipstick and liner, this is a makeup minimalist’s dream!
I love how buildable the color is with Ultralip. The formula is truly comfortable on my lips. It doesn’t feel sticky or heavy so it’s wearable year-round. Ultralip feels similar to my YSL Volupte Shine Lipstick Balm (which is $38) so in a lot of ways, Glossier is a great dupe to some of the high-end tubes.
I would say the biggest downside is that it was not formulated to be a longwearing lip color. I applied Villa on my lips the day I got my package and about an hour later it started to fade and by the time I finished eating my dinner, it had disappeared. If you’re looking for a stay all day lipstick, this isn’t for you.
I think $18 is slightly higher than what I was hoping to pay but it’s right on brand with Glossier pricing. I was hoping they would offer a duo savings to help but currently Ultralip is only available as a set with other makeup products. Just know that no one needs every shade in this collection.
